Audio Book Summary

Pendergast--the world's most enigmatic FBI Special Agent--returns to New York City to investigate a murderous cult.

William Smithback, a New York Times reporter, and his wife Nora Kelly, a Museum of Natural History archaeologist, are brutally attacked in their apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Eyewitnesses claim, and the security camera confirms, that the assailant was their strange, sinister neighbor--a man who, by all reports, was already dead and buried weeks earlier. While Captain Laura Hayward leads the official investigation, Pendergast and Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta undertake their own private--and decidedly unorthodox--quest for the truth. Their serpentine journey takes them to an enclave of Manhattan they never imagined could exist: a secretive, reclusive cult of Obeah and vodou which no outsiders have ever survived.

I adore the authors, and the Pendergast series, but with Cemetery Dance, they were not at the top of their game. Even for fiction, this was over the top, the same character being attacked four times, almost in the same way, and that character for being as smart and educated as she was, to make such catastrophic errors of judgement, all I could feel was disappointment. The reader is always excellent. I would not recommend this book.

I'm a sucker for the Pendergast series. Its just fun listening and I give Preston and Child much respect for coming up with fun plots, villains, mysteries, beasts, magic legends to keep me entertained. Is it fine literature? No. Is it well written and fun as hell? Yes. Not every book is as successful as others, but THIS book has all the right elements! Listen and enjoy. Narrator is awesome as well, sells it to T. By the way, for devoted Pendergast fans I just came up with the best new word : Pendergasm! : When you can't believe how awesome whatever Pendrgast has just done or said. YES !
