Audio Book Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Mrs. Kennedy and Me and Five Days in November reflects on his seventeen years on the Secret Service for presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford.

The assassination of one president, the resignation of another, and the swearing-in of the two who followed those traumatic events. Clint Hill was there, on duty, through Five Presidents.

After an extraordinary career as a Special Agent on the White House Detail, Clint Hill retired in 1975. His career spanned the administrations of Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford. A witness to some of the most pivotal moments in the twentieth century, Hill lets you walk in his shoes alongside the most powerful men in the world during tumultuous times in America’s history—the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Vice President Spiro Agnew and President Nixon.

It was indeed a turbulent time—and through it all, Clint Hill had a unique insider perspective. His fascinating stories will shed new light on the character and personality of each of these five presidents, as Hill witnesses their human sides in the face of grave decisions.

This was an extraordinary book. Mr. Hill’s humility and dedication to the presidents and their families was refreshing and admirable. After listening to this, I do not think I will ever look at the office of the President or of the Secret Service the same.

Some interesting information. Very nice to hear the details of what happens behind the scenes. Clint Hill appears to have been a terrible husband and father. He even demonstrated concern when he asked another agent to consult his wife about taking a new role, but never discussed doing this with his own wife. Horrible. I however admire his devotion to the country.

Wonderful read about the close-up lives and history in the makling from Presidents Eisenhower thru Ford. Clint Hill witnessed and participated in so much history during that time. His insights into the personalities of the men he served is fascinating. He sacrificed his personal life and suffered a great deal of stress and depression as a result of witnessing the Kennedy assassination. Hill is obviously a man of great integrity and work ethic and I hope he finds peace.

I thought it was a very insightful story. I didn't feel like the reading style fit the story, but the history kept my attention.

Incredible story of the evolution of the U.S. Secret Service. Just amazing how almost primitive it was in 1958 vs. when Clint Hill left in 1975. Sad to see how such a dedicated man had such difficulty reconciling the demons from the Kennedy assassination. The book was like eavesdropping on pivotal U.S. History with interesting anecdotes as well. Terrific.
