Audio Book Summary

They were called a generation without heroes. Then they were called upon to be heroes. Within hours of 9/11, America's war on terrorism fell to those like the twenty-three Marines of the First Recon Battalion, the first generation dispatched into open-ended combat since Vietnam. They were a new breed of American warrior unrecognizable to their forebears-soldiers raised on hip-hop, Internet porn, Marilyn Manson, video games, and The Real World, a band of born-again Christians, dopers, Buddhists, and New Agers who gleaned their precepts from kung fu movies and Oprah Winfrey. Cocky, brave, headstrong, wary, and mostly unprepared for the physical, emotional, and moral horrors ahead, the 'First Suicide Battalion' would spearhead the blitzkrieg on Iraq and fight against the hardest resistance Saddam had to offer.

Generation Kill is the funny, frightening, and profane firsthand account of these remarkable men, of the personal toll of victory, and of the randomness, brutality, and camaraderie of a new American war.

True to life as a soldier, not everyone will understand, but as real as it could be minus the smell.

The book and narrator are great. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It's a very real look into the inner circle of the pointy end of the military. My issue is with multiple instances missing audio. Incomplete sentences and unfinished paragraphs and then picking up the story at the next sentence or paragraph. Super annoying knowing there is missing content. This audio book is also copied off of a CD so at some point you are told "this is the end of CD1 the story will continue on CD2". Not a huge deal but it names the experience feel a little cheap.

A good glimpse into the culture of the Marine Corps. A great account of a Marine Force Recon unit's experiences during the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It is really amazing that this reporter was able to just be present during the insanity of war, all the while keeping good notes on the duration of his stay with the unit.

Insight into the nature of the US military. FUBAR. Highly Recommended. The HBO series based on this book is great too.

This book was written very well. The author describes everything in great detail, and what these guys went through together was crazy.
