Audio Book Summary

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed . If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. . . . .

Excellent book and still very relevant today. I cannot wait to discuss it with my book club. Unfortunately Joanna David was the wrong choice to narrate this distopian tale told by the protagonist Offred, a young American female voice. While David's diction and expression were fine her English accent sat badly with me and her wisely aged voice was not appropriate. Also the historical notes would have been better narrated by a male. Just to emphasise the point of that part in relation to the overall themes of the book. Attwood has created a masterpiece. I highly recommend this book just maybe by another narrator.

Love the book as with some others in this genre, it really hits home decades later! Sorry but I didn\'t love the narrator.

I started reading this and couldn\'t get my head round it. I revisited the book three months later and although its not light reading I kind of enjoyed it.

It wasn't really my kind of book. I wasn't expecting it. It was a good idea and an interesting story but I didn't enjoy it that much.

I am listening to this in the first week of the Trump presidency. It feels very prescient. The rights of women are hard won and could be lost so easily as this very elegant dystopian novel shows.
