Beautifully written, often heartbreaking. The passing of the first born will always haunt me. Not that I ever wanted to forget W.E.B.\'s devotional description of his beloved, golden haired ringlet-ed infant son, but it stays with me and haunts me just the same. A beautiful infant life crushed and his parents dreams destroyed because he wasn\'t the \"right\" color and the doctor wouldn\'t care for him. The insidious color line and those who live behind the veil, the poignant way these lives are brought to us. It\'s never enough for me to say I\'d would\'ve made it different if I were there 100 years ago. I\'ll never understand the hate and apathy that treated human beings this way.

Dubois has a profound and eloquent understanding of racism with all its nuances. One of the most beautiful books I have ever read, and always wanted to read. Lovely reader voice.

A “must read” for everyone. It’s one of those books that should be compulsory studied at school.

Sound quality makes this virtually unbearable. Just awful.

This was MAGNIFICENT. The reader is excellent in his pacing, clarity, and emphasis. And W.E.B. Dubois’ writing is not only musical and evocative, it’s rich in emotion without being exaggerated. Every time I had to put this down, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. Gorgeous.

Taught me a lot about African American history. The narrator spoke slowly and clearly so he was easy to follow!
