Audio Book Summary

Soon to be a major motion picture streaming on Netflix!

The first installment of Scott Westerfeld’s New York Times bestselling and award-winning Uglies series—a global phenomenon that started the dystopian trend.

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun.

But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world—and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. Tally’s choice will change her world forever.

I decided on this book because of the great reviews but I gave up half way through. However I do agree with the other reviews that the narrator is great. I’m thinking this may be a young adult classification and I never noticed. It’s got a pretty lame story. Really Padded out with constant repetition of the same thoughts and feelings. Pretty Meh!

This piece was a little like life itself. It's an interesting concept but mostly boring in reality with intermittent joy and tragedy thrown in to keep us chasing the former and running from the latter. We chase and run with drugs, sex, booze, cigarettes, TV, the NFL, food, money, conspicuous consumption, degrees, job titles, not to mention the addictive and ubiquitous Facebook like. By the time I realized I should have enjoyed it all more and worried less I was more hay than grass. My body can't do what I want it to anymore because they forgot to tell me when you're on the wrong side of 40 that your eyes go out, your injuries never, ever heal and the delusion of invincibility coupled with arrested existential crises truly come home to roost. But still mostly boring.

This book was required reading, but my son and I both enjoyed it. The concepts we can all relate to and follow. The edge of fantasy was well captured and the narrator was great!
