Audio Book Summary

A beloved classic that captures the powerful bond between man and man’s best friend.

Billy has long dreamt of owning not one, but two, dogs. So when he’s finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he’s ecstatic. It doesn’t matter that times are tough; together they’ll roam the hills of the Ozarks.

Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan’s brawn, Little Ann’s brains, and Billy’s sheer will seems unbeatable. But tragedy awaits these determined hunters—now friends—and Billy learns that hope can grow out of despair, and that the seeds of the future can come from the scars of the past.

This book was beautiful. The author described every part perfectly, and it made it seem like it was really happening. I watched both the movies and I still think even the book described everything far better than the movie did. I bawled my eyes out at the end, and only very few books have made me cry, but when they do I actually love it. If you don't read this you are missing out!!

Really heartwarming story. The author writes in such a way that despite a very simple storyline, the intricate details paint a beautiful picture and it holds your attention. My nine year old boy really enjoyed it.

The book is amazing in and of itself but the narrator brought it to life! My 4 children were enthralled with the story and my oldest ( 11 ) said the man reading the book was so good and made the book really fun to listen to!

This book was required reading in the 4th 5th and 6th grade when I was in Elementary school I didn't mind rereading it every year. Now I listen to it for enjoyment as an adult. It's still my favorite book!
