Audio Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“Star Wars: Aftermath [reveals] what happened after the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi. It turns out, there’s more than just the Empire for the good guys to worry about.”—The Hollywood Reporter

As the Empire reels from its critical defeats at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance—now a fledgling New Republic—presses its advantage by hunting down the enemy’s scattered forces before they can regroup and retaliate. But above the remote planet Akiva, an ominous show of the enemy’s strength is unfolding. Out on a lone reconnaissance mission, pilot Wedge Antilles watches Imperial Star Destroyers gather like birds of prey circling for a kill, but he’s taken captive before he can report back to the New Republic leaders.

Meanwhile, on the planet’s surface, former rebel fighter Norra Wexley has returned to her native world—war weary, ready to reunite with her estranged son, and eager to build a new life in some distant place. But when Norra intercepts Wedge Antilles’s urgent distress call, she realizes her time as a freedom fighter is not yet over. What she doesn’t know is just how close the enemy is—or how decisive and dangerous her new mission will be.

Determined to preserve the Empire’s power, the surviving Imperial elite are converging on Akiva for a top-secret emergency summit—to consolidate their forces and rally for a counterstrike. But they haven’t reckoned on Norra and her newfound allies—her technical-genius son, a Zabrak bounty hunter, and a reprobate Imperial defector—who are prepared to do whatever they must to end the Empire’s oppressive reign once and for all.

Praise for Aftermath

“The Force is strong with Star Wars: Aftermath.”—Alternative Nation

“The Star Wars universe is fresh and new again, and just as rich and mysterious as it always was.”—Den of Geek

“[Chuck] Wendig neatly captures the current states of the Empire and Rebel Alliance and does so through flawed, real, and nuanced characters. His writing gets you up close and personal. . . . Wendig does wonders with dialogue and voice and carving out space for everyone to breathe. Aftermath is a strong foot forward into unexplored territory and puts down just enough foundation that you can start picturing the Resistance and First Order of The Force Awakens taking shape.”—Nerdist

“If the opening chapter of the Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy is any indication, the ‘Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will be every bit as exciting as the movie.”—New York Daily News

“A wonderful Star Wars adventure by a gifted author.”—SF Book Reviews

Narrator did a good job bringing the characters to life and making sense of the author's disjointed and frantic writing. No hate for the narrator at all. The author, on the other hand.... The book itself: wasn't the worst thing I've ever read... The author uses lots of short sentences. It seems the only way to enjoy this book would be in audio format. SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT(some worse than others) How many times can a character "die" to come back miraculously after a brief unrelated interlude? I think it might happen 4 times in this book and became predictable and annoying. As others have noted, this book has all kinds of references that would make a Star Wars nerd giddy and make for wonderful descriptions, but doesn't make for believable dialogue. "As Han would say 'fly casual' " would make sense if it was the writer talking directly to the reader, but not as a thought a character is having who wasn't even present when the iconic quote was said. I'm not against homosexuality, and have no problem with it. Nor do I have a problem with strong female leads, people (or aliens) of "color", etc... I do find issue when it seems the write was trying to hard to make a statement rather than just tell avoid story. The most of the main/interesting characters were either black, female, or gay (or all three). There were 5 gay characters mentioned in the book. This seems a it excessive, though perhaps the straight to gay ratio in this galaxy is different than ours? I didn't notice this in the movies, clone wars, other books I've read.... And it isn't just casual mention either. There is a part where they were talking about a orphan who's parents died. I would have accepted: his parents were dead, he was orphaned, or even his dads were dead (note: when mentioning heterosexual couples, rarely will they feel the need to mention the sex of the parents, it's usually just parents) Instead, the author elected to say "his TWO dads were dead" wait to make sure we didn't miss the fact that this boy was indeed raised by a gay couple. This fact adds nothing to the story and I felt was out of place. I could go on about the other sins of this book but I won't.... I am disappointed Disney chose this author to write official canon for Star Wars. James Lucerno would have made a much better choice. To make things worse, this is a trilogy!!!!!! I cannot and will it endure two more of these books to get what appears to be meaningless backstory so far.... I'll skim the wookiepedia later for plot points.

This book reads like terrible fan fiction. The narrator over-acts to compensate for the juvenile script. I’m trying to push through it so I can get a canon story, but it isn’t easy.

I thought the book was a poor substitute for the Star Wars stories of old by Timothy Zahn and others. I didn't care about the characters and felt the spin offs throughout the book were a padding because the story was underdeveloped. The narration was well done, but I didn't always like the sound effects in the background.

I have trouble supporting an author who doesn’t like someone having different moral beliefs

The absolute worst star wars book ever written. And I do mean the worst. Disney hired the author from being a blog/twitter for some mind numbing reason and it shows. horrible sentence structure, disjointed new storylines for THE FIRST 12 CHAPTERS, and terrible tropes cause me for the first time ever to not finish a star wars book. When a news crew said \"We\'re trending!\" it was just too much. Horrible!

I checked this out hoping it may be a little prelude to the force awakens .......... Well that really wasn't what I got. If this is how the movie is then I may just wait till it hits Blu Ray.

I cannot believe the level of homosexuality that was necessary to include in this Star Wars book. How hard can the author push at adding nightly news tripe to Star Wars? It's like watching a gay rights parade. Is this what Disney wants the author to do? Where does sexual orientation even need to come up in Star Wars?

I found it hard to invest in the new characters but enjoyed the expressive narrator

The story itself is good, but the writing is a bit choppy until the middle of the book. I personally don't like most of the newly introduced characters though. I like Jas the bounty hunter and Mr. Bones the robot. Jas is interesting to me, because of her family. If one has watched Clone Wars, one might remember the aunt of Jas, Sugi. I really liked her in the episode where she and other bounty hunters protect farmers from Hondo.

Filling the gaps in the time line between Star Wars 6 and 7, this story is a good start to the trilogy. All the heros, villains, and action true to the Star Wars style.
