Audio Book Summary

Elinor is an Extraordinary, and the only one in England capable of wielding fire in over one hundred years. As an Extraordinary, she is respected and feared, but to her father, she represents power and prestige for himself. Mr. Pembroke, having spent his life studying magic, is determined to control Elinor and her talent by forcing her to marry where he chooses, a marriage that will produce even more powerful offspring. Trapped between the choices of a loveless marriage or living penniless and dependent on her parents, Elinor takes a third path: she defies tradition and society to join the Royal Navy.

Assigned to serve under Captain Miles Ramsay aboard the frigate Athena, she turns her fiery talent on England's enemies, French privateers, and vicious pirates preying on English ships in the Caribbean. At first feared by her shipmates, a growing number of victories make her truly part of Athena's crew and bring her joy in her fire. But as her power grows and changes in unexpected ways, Elinor's ability to control it is challenged. She may have the power to destroy her enemies utterly-but could it be at the cost of her own life?

A fun book. Needed a better introduction to how the “talents” worked and where they originated

Imagine regency England where many people have a "talent" and a few have theirs be absolutely Extraordinary. Elinor awakens one night to her room on fire and her whole world changes from being a spinster to being a valuable marriage mart commodity for her family due to her potential to create powerful children. Desperate to escape a forced marriage, she offers her services to the Royal Navy in protecting their ships from pirates and Napoleon's forces, then gets assigned to the Athena captained by Miles Ramsey. McShane does an excellent job painting Elinor's desperate plight and naivety in the bargain she makes. Ramsey is the epitome of the perfect gentleman and honorable captain and consistently shows knowledge and forethought in his actions. His respect and guidance while Elinor is on the Athena builds a strong foundation between them. This is a clean love story built from shared experiences and common traits. The relationship is secondary to a well thought out plot with many twists and turns along the way showing how different people react to her as a woman on a ship with an extraordinarily dangerous talent that keeps growing and threatens to overtake her.

The premise has potential, but the writing is boring. Couldn't keep my interest.
