Audio Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a novel of redemption and suspense, as a woman haunted by the unsolved murder of her childhood friend returns to her small South Carolina hometown. . . .

Tory Bodeen grew up in a run-down house where her father ruled with an iron fist and a leather belt—and where her dreams and talents had no room to flourish. Her one escape was her neighbor Hope, who lived in the big house just a short skip away, and whose friendship allowed Tory to be something she wasn’t allowed to be at home: a child.

Then Hope was brutally murdered, and everything fell apart.

Now, as she returns to Progress with plans to settle in and open a stylish home-design shop, Tory is determined to find a measure of peace and free herself from the haunting visions of the past. As she forges a new bond with Cade Lavelle—Hope’s older brother and the heir to the family fortune—she isn’t sure whether the tragic loss they share will unite them or drive them apart. But she is willing to open her heart, just a little, and try.

But living so close to those unhappy memories will be more difficult and frightening than Tory could ever have expected. Because Hope’s murderer is nearby as well. . . .

“Roberts may have achieved her personal best in this tense Southern Gothic. As atmospheric and unsettling as a Tennessee Williams play. . . . This is romantic drama at its best.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The book was good. However the narrator completely ruined this for me. They read too quickly without intonation or emotion making the story really difficult to follow . Several times I found myself rewinding to listen to it again due to the narrator’s poor diction

This is a great read. I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts. The Narration is fine and doesn't muddle the story to make you try and figure out who's talking.

I enjoyed the book. Norah Roberts writes so well that I actually felt the humidity curling my hair while I was listening. Narrator kept it interesting. The accents sometimes were a little off but overall I thought she did a good job.

I really enjoyed hearing someone with a southern accent read a book set in the south! It made it feel more authentic. The story was good as well.

The story was very good but I did not like the reader. She was boring and did not have emotion in her voice or voice change for the characters. It really took away from the book and allowed my mind to wander.

I love Nora Roberts. I have also heard this reader before and I like her. I slowly figured out the ending but was still surprised at the end the way it was handled. I really loved that aspect of the story. I feel like Nora Roberts love of the supernatural, romance and fiction fit so well into this book. Each book seems to search some new area. There is a famiilarity to her books but still lots of surprises and new backdrops to the stories. I pick up her books and wonder where we are going this time. Ireland, Wyoming, Maryland-City or Country-Ghosts, vampires, or mindreading or Doctors, police or builders- she explores them all and mixes them so delightfully.
