Audio Book Summary

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous.

If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body.

This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering. It is a comprehensive self-help guide for working through the toxic legacy of the past and for achieving a rich and fulfilling life.

Having recently found out that I have CPTSD, I wish I had read this book MANY years ago. I was able to identify almost to the word with certain scenarios described in the book. So much makes sense now and I hope to begin my long road to recovering or thriving. I recommend this book to people with CPTSD but also to their loved ones because I think having such a great explanation of the condition can only be helpful in understanding what is going on. I had no idea about emotional flashbacks until I read this book. I also loved being able to understand my response type and not only the bad but the good in them. I feel like I could go on and on about how incredible this book is to be honest.

coming from my perspective I found this title quite disheartening, and difficult to absorb. I am glad I listened to the audio instead of read it myself. I couldn't get through one paragraph on my own with the actual book in my hands. I was annoyed by the amount of times the author used the word "melange." Also the author listed probably 30 to 40 other books to read throughout the course of the book and while I'm well aware that there is no one size fits all cure to cptsd, I felt like the book could have stood to be more of a standalone resource, instead of one that defines terms that you won't find defined or explained too well in this book, and spaghettis over to a whole slew of other books. Things I gained by reading this book include how long and difficult/complicated the healing process is. I feel like at this stage in my own journey that is only a reminder. On a more positive note the author does a good job of breaking down the size and scheme of cptsd.

This book was no help at all to me. When I go to a resource I want to hear the information and not just be sent to resource. I wanted something motivational and uplifting and i just didn't get that from this book. Sorry!
