As a reader of thousands of thrillers, I enjoyed this novel. A twist on the genre - no spies, no cops, but yes encroaching technology - it was a fun romp. The main character is well drawn, as are the supporting cast. Extended flashbacks interrupted the flow of the narrative, and I felt the author gave away the "big twist" a fraction too early and a bit clumsily. After that, however, the race to the finish line was exciting. However, the reader ruined this book for me. Just simply the wrong choice. He had a sort of mid-western, apple-pie, Garrison Keiller kind of delivery, while the main character was a boozy, washed up, former superstar medical researcher. It just did not fit at all. Add to that to the fact that there was very little differentiation between characters of different ages and genders - the reading was all the same. Wish I had read it on paper.
