Audio Book Summary

Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel of love during wartime.

Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield, this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep.

Hemingway famously rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. A classic novel of love during wartime, “A Farewell to Arms stands, more than eighty years after its first appearance, as a towering ornament of American literature” (The Washington Times).

This audio program brings the World War I struggles of Hemingway's characters to life without detracting from the listener's imagination. The story chronicles the life of an American expatriate commissioned by the Italian army to lead a team of ambulances and his British consort (a beautiful nurse) as they try to eek out some semblance of a "normal" existence in wartime Italy.

I only wish I had read or listened to this long ago so that I could have just enjoyed it again. Thank you to the eloquent, graceful John Slattery for sharing words as though written to be read aloud.

The narrator was excellent. The book, like other Hemingway novels I have read, left me wondering "so what?". It might have been groundbreaking back then, but quite predictable today.

What make a book an enduring classic - when it is still great 80 years after it was written. Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms is is that.

I must admit I have a real love/hate relationship with Hemmingway and this is one I truly loved. It is an excellent example of Hemmingway at his finest and is a highly recommended classic. The narration is also very well done.
