Audio Book Summary

Heroine is based on the true story of Danna Davis and her 10 years in the US Army. A survivor of military sexual trauma, hers is a human story exploring healing, forgiveness and what speaking your truth really means - with grit, lyricism and necessary black humour.

On a dangerous mission inside a combat zone, Sgt Davis must work with the perpetrator of her sexual attack to get her squad home safely. Is peace possible?

This audiobook is more of a fully realised radio drama, with FULLY IMMERSIVE SOUND DESIGN from sound designer and foley artist Heather Andrews, and narration from Audie Award Winning narration Mary Jane Wells. Heroine began as Wells' award-winning solo performance, winning a Scottish Theatre Arts Trust Award and a Made in Scotland Award on its World Premiere at Assembly Rooms, in The Edinburgh Festival 2018. Heroine's USA debut was at The Kennedy Center, Washington DC, in February 2020.

This story contains triggers, strong language, depictions of sexual violence and graphic content. It is a fully realised story, but not without the humour that makes Danna a fully rounded person, who refuses to be a figure of tragedy. Its intention is to bring listeners into the heart of Danna's full experience frankly and responsibly to give her account the honesty and dignity it deserves, and the intention is to tell her story in all its colours. Woven deep into the fabric of Heroine is the rubric that 'It is not the event that has the power to define your life, but the story you choose to tell about it.'

I have had the privilege of seeing the production of heroine at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was blown away by the play and the performance by Mary Jane. Having worked in the field of trauma with survivors of childhood sexual abuse and adult sexual assault and rape I felt everything in heroine is authentic and real. To tell the story of Danna with such honesty and integrity, bringing the reality of her experience to audiences gives a voice to Danna and the countless survivors who are regularly silenced. A story of pain, survival and redemption. Anne Macdonald Scotland An amazing play and now audio book will enable a new audience to be part of Dannas journey

I found Heroine to be honest, wonderfully literate, and beautifully acted. And, based on 35 years of experience in working with Veterans with PTSD and other disorders of extreme stress, I can add that this play is informed by a firm understanding that psychological trauma is a wound at the core of who and what we are.

Stunning, brilliant, engaging! This story was heart wrenching but such an important topic. Mary Jane Wells made it come to life. I loved the way she would step out of the story and talk to the listener then take you right back into the action. The story is so intense that she almost had to do that to hold your hand while you both lived it. Terrific!
