Audio Book Summary

How the Light Gets In is the ninth Chief Inspector Gamache Novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny.

'There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.' —Leonard Cohen

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by Myrna's reluctance to reveal her friend's name, Gamache soon discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous people not just in North America, but in the world, and now goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad, brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.

As events come to a head, Gamache is drawn ever deeper into the world of Three Pines. Increasingly, he is not only investigating the disappearance of Myrna's friend but also seeking a safe place for himself and his still-loyal colleagues. Is there peace to be found even in Three Pines, and at what cost to Gamache and the people he holds dear?

These are a MUST READ for mystery fans with a love for deeply warm characters and a hint of Canadian history. I am absolutely enamored with the Inspector Gamache series and this was Louise Penny's best one yet. I could not put it down. Tender moments, edge of my seat, relief, pain, joy and simply mesmerizing. I just read that Amazon is picking up the Gamache series and will be produced as the Three Pine Mysteries. CAN'T WAIT to see who plays Gamache!

Loved loved loved this book. Very sad to hear of the narrator's passing. He's the reason I listened to all the books - super job, so engaging.

I love Louise Penny’s novels. I’m an unabashed mystery fan. In conversation with a cousin (French speaking Canadian) she recommended Louise Penny. I wasn’t able to get the books in written form at my library. So, I’ve had the added pleasure of Ralph Cosham’s oral interpretation of the novels. I love his reading of them, his narration is compassionate, believable & really adds to the already amazing cast. Thank you cousin! Thank you Canada!

Each book reminds me of home in different ways, - I love that. And just when I think the next book can't possibly be any better than the one I've just finished, I learn, once again, how wrong I can be ????

Another GREAT Inspector Gamache book! Very engaging story line with lots of old friends from Three Pines, as well as finally getting resolution to some old mysteries that have been hinted at along the way. Mr. Cosham is the embodiment of Gamache to me, he captures his strength and his gentleness so perfectly! Thank you Louise Penny for this wonderful series of books. They are smart, exciting and have so many characters that I have absolutely fallen in love with. And don't get me started on the food porn, lol ????. Definitely a five star book! ?? ????????

This book was selected by a member of my book club and I was a little skeptical when I read the story synopsis. I hadn't read any other books in the series. I also found it difficult to understand the narrator initially as his voice often trails off at the end of sentences. However, I became engrossed in the story and his voice interpretation. At the end of the book, there is an interview with the narrator. I learned then that he had narrated all the previous books and was in fact seen by many as the 'voice' of Inspector Gamache. Very entertaining.
