Audio Book Summary

Returning to her hometown after the funeral of her parents, writer Erica Falck finds a community on the brink of tragedy. The death of her childhood friend, Alex, is just the beginning. Her wrists slashed, her body frozen in an ice cold bath, it seems that she has taken her own life. Erica conceives a memoir about the beautiful but remote Alex, one that will answer questions about their lost friendship. While her interest grows to an obsession, local detective Patrik Hedstrom is following his own suspicions about the case. But it is only when they start working together that the truth begins to emerge about the small town with a deeply disturbing past.

While this book is not awful, it failed to hold my interest as well as I hoped. Its language is meandering and pacing suffers for it, and stakes felt low for all characters involved. The individual parts of the plot are compelling and combined in a relatively interesting way; however, a significant edit to tighten up this novel's structure would have improved it substantially, in my opinion. Normally, I like getting into characters a bit farther than many mystery novels go, but some of the author's diversions into the personalities of this novel felt shoe-horned in to create artificial space between hints and payoff. The narration is solid, though falls a little far into making the female characters sound high-pitched and breathy which is something that drives me nuts about some male narrators

it may actually be a good book, I didn't finish it, but it's not a good audiobook. it's incredibly hard to flow with all the back and forth of different stories/ characters in each chapter.

I enjoyed the story lines and complex characters. Particularly the women characters which I think a lot of good writers dont get right to a comical degree along with the true feel of small town life. Not really into crime/mystery anymore but I truly enjoyed it and would recommend.

For me this book started out slow but as I continued to listen it did check my interest. I wanted the know how the author was going to resolve the story lines. Overall I found the book interesting and I enjoyed it.

If this book were about 10 pages, it would be readable. As it is, it's horrible. It starts out wonderfully, with the killer leaving the scene of the murder that the book is based around. What follows is hours of non-sequitur dialogue and stories that revolve around people who, more times than not, have nothing to do with advancing the action. I managed to make it to the 4th disk before I gave up. I listened to the last disk to find out who the killer was and, well, it was well written and presented. But after that there is about an hour of nonsensical prose that, I guess, is meant to serve as an epilogue. No, I didn't listen to the entire book, and I checked other reviews on Amazon to see if I was in the wrong. Turns out many people who read the entire thing agree with me. Pass on this one.
