Audio Book Summary

In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift-an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and fresh-cut wood. Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the 'ultimate perfume'-the scent of a beautiful young virgin. Told with dazzling narrative brilliance, Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity.

Super satisfying if shocking ending. Scent is very hard to describe but the author manages to take you on an olfactory journey. Very well written

I thought this was a very strange story. But the negative was it went into way too much detail about every smell that he smelled and just too much detail that wasn’t really necessary to the story . The crimes that he committed just seem like a weird afterthought.

I’ve always loved this book. The movie could never do it justice.

First I saw the 2006 movie "Perfume" because it had Alan Rickman in it. The movie is almost a perfect adaptation of the book. The concept blew me away because it has to do with sensory overload. Too many smells, too many colors, too many voices, and too many people can drive one to madness, although I doubt psychopathy. It was a devilish plot, though. I highly recommend it.
