Audio Book Summary

This is a very well-written explanation and defense of the Biblical doctrine of Predestination. The author, Loraine Boettner, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Tarkio College in 1925. He then attended Princeton Theological Seminary, receiving two degrees there: a Bachelor of Theology in 1928, and a Master of Theology in 1929. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Tarkio College in 1933. First published in 1932, this is the 1954 edition. The author deals thoroughly with Predestination by examining six main sections. Section 1 defines the terms and concepts, laying the foundation: it is illogical for an infinite and wise God to create a world without a definite plan for that world. Section 2 elaborates the well-known “Five Points of Calvinism.” Section 3 considers common objections to the Reformed understanding of Predestination. Section 4 looks at salvation by grace and the personal assurance of salvation. It also compares Predestination to Fatalism. Section 5 shows the practical importance of the doctrine of Predestination. Section 6 briefly recounts the importance of Calvinism throughout church history and how it shaped the development of liberty among nations.
