Audio Book Summary

Red Schuhart is a stalker, one of those young rebels who are compelled, in spite of extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a “full empty,” something goes wrong. And the news he gets from his girlfriend upon his return makes it inevitable that he’ll keep going back to the Zone, again and again, until he finds the answer to all his problems.

More a look at 70s Russia than sci-fi. Are we sure it wasn’t sponsored by a cigarette company? The alcoholism, misogyny and wife beating took away from a mostly meh story.

Recommended by a friend. Not what I'd normally go for but I enjoyed it.

Great listen, I was about to start playing the STALKER games but heard they were based on this book so decided to give it a listen. Wonderful book and I loved the afterword by the author about it's release

The book is a classic and the connection to the masterpiece but very different film is enriching in both directions. Robert Forester is a great actor and his talent really shines here.

Wow wow wow. I'm seriously impressed. I was listening to this along side reading the original Russian version and am pleasantly surprised how excellent the translation is and how wonderfully it's relayed by the narrator. I have listened to several audio books and none of the narrators come close to the artistry of this one. This little audio production is an absolute treasure. Thank you!!!
