Audio Book Summary

With his twinkling eyes, boundless energy and unrivalled natural wit, Robin Williams was the comedian who brought laughter to a generation.Through roles in cherished films such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Aladdin and Hook, he became the genial face of family comedy. His child-like enthusiasm was infectious, sweeping viewers away. Allied to his lightning-quick improvisation and ability to riff lewdly off any cue thrown at him, Robin was that rare thing - a true comic genius who appealed to adults and children equally. He could also play it straight, and empathetic depth came to him naturally. A poignant performance in Good Will Hunting won him an Academy Award whilst his masterfully chilling turn in psychological thriller Insomnia shocked audiences and hinted at a darker side. What truly caught the imagination, though, was his good-heartedness. Warmth radiated from him on-screen, but he was legendary for his off-screen acts of selfless generosity. Where most Hollywood A-listers demand outrageous pampering in their contract riders, he always insisted that the production company hire a full quota of homeless people to help make his movies. But behind the laughter lay a deeply troubled man, and tragedy would follow. At midday, on 11 August 2014, Robin Williams was pronounced dead at his California home. The verdict was suicide. He had battled depression and addiction for many years and was allegedly beset by financial difficulties.Virginia Blackburn's sensitive and thoughtful biography celebrates his genius and warmth, but also attempts to understand what could have driven such a gentle and gifted man to so tragic an end.

This book would be an awful lot shorter if it wasn't for the big quotes from media articles. The book felt short and really skimmed over a lot of the topics covered. As a died in the wool Robin Williams fan I enjoyed it, but the book would have been much better served by an american narrator who could actually capture RW's voices...such a waste choosing a british voice for this!!

Very sad biography of Robin Williams. No doubt an extremely talented man gone way too soon. There were a few things I didn’t care for. First, the narrator having a British accent seemed inappropriate considering Williams didn’t speak with one, Second, the constant assumption that one of Williams’ “demons” was his relationship, or lack thereof, with his mother. Perhaps the relationship might not have been a typical one, but if it was as damaging as portrayed, I would have liked to have heard it from things Williams himself said about his mother, not from a third party who in all likelihood didn’t even know him. Finally, I felt the author spent way too much time quoting so many reviews about the various movies that were mentioned. After 2-3 reviews I believe the conclusion of either o good or bad movie could be made. Overall, it was a very interesting but sad story about someone that had the world in his hands but couldn’t see or appreciate it. Perhaps evidence of how money, fame and talent will not provide the joy that a person craves which can only be found with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The writer seems more infatuated with Robins critics and his personal faults and the only loving words are quotes from hashtagged Tweets

the narrator's accent took a bit to get used to, but after a while I was able to focus on the content more. the book was pretty good, I learned a lot about Robin. although I felt like the random quotes throughout the book, the sorrowful consolences at the beginning, and the critical reviews of his acting/roles kind of took over the story.

Good book & narrator. Was hoping for a little more than superstar theme "he/she was brilliant and turned to drugs for self medication".
