Audio Book Summary

In her extraordinary work with dolphins, Patricia St.John broke new ground in opening little-known worlds, all in pursuit of what she fiercely believed in: learning the languages of those who have been unreachable. Using what she has discovered from her years of work with dolphins, St.John was able to break through to autistic children. Her story is a remarkable one.

Said the author: “When I left the pool that first day, I had no way of knowing I was taking the first steps toward breaking the barriers of dolphin-human communication…[or that] I would go on to find a way to use what I’d learned to improve the condition of other humans. At that first meeting, I had no idea how this information would enable me to eventually free autistic children to communicate with those who cared for them and about them.”

I've listened to over 100 audiobooks and never before have I simply been unable to keep listening. In telling her story, the author comes off as a self-indulgent, self-important, self-congratulatory, self-absorbed, logically-challenged egomaniac in desperate need of attention and recognition. Ridiculous causal links are presented as fact and conclusions reached are presented in consistently hyperbolic terms. Her "ends-justify-the-means" approach to her work means that anyone who objects to anything she is doing is portrayed as a thoughtless jerk while she is portrays herself as a martyr-hero. I listened to more than half of the book and had learned nothing about the language of dolphins or about working with autistic children. This book isn't worth your time.

I made myself finish listening to this book. I was waiting for it to get better/interesting.......but that didn't happen. Could have skipped this one.

An excellent book; a great story. As the Godfather of an autistic child, this helped me to understand some of his behaviors. I would have really liked to hear more about her dealings with other autistic children, and the outcome of her encounters, especially if there were other interactions of autistic children with dolphins.

Excellent book. My life long discoveries have been the same in my research with Autistic people and mammals unofficially. Thank you Patricia St. John for writing this information and people will see this information even more helpful as the decades go by. Look for my book which will be done by 2015 or so.
