Audio Book Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years.

What would happen if the world were ending?

A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . .

Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Some books you listen to and six months later you see them in your library and don't even remember what they were about or reading them. This is NOT one of those books. It enveloped me and transported me into its world (isn't that what it's supposed to do). I found myself, more than once, obeying the speed limit to slow my drive and sitting in the driveway for an extra 15 minutes because I couldn't pause the story. You must listen to this book. It's worth every minute of the 32 hours.

Expansive and fascinating, the complex details, intriguing plot(s) and many varied aspects of humanity make Seveneves worth the time. This is a memorable and impressive work. The narrators are flawless.

Loved it, I thought it was a very interesting take on the 'end of the world' theme. I love sci-fi and especially stories like these, that feel real and realistic. It might be heavy in some places, and when I read it myself I quickly zoomed out. I find the audio book easier to listen to that actually read the book myself. It's my first book from Neal so I don't have anything to compare it to, but from this I find that I want to read more of his work.

I"ve been a huge fan for over 20 years, but the Tom Swift last quarter in Anathem was a warning of more danger to come. This is not the edgy, constantly surprising curve balls of a younger Neal Stephenson. It's a pedantic shopping list of tired sci-fi tropes. And good or bad, Neal Stephenson books last a really long time. The narration is horrible, worse character voices ever, absolutely no talent for it. Sorry but that is not the voice for this kind of novel. Massive disappointment on both scores. Neal, get your head out of your butt. If this is all you have left in you, then stop now while you are still among the greatest writers who ever lived.

I am struggling to get through this book. Way too much information and not enough conversation. Love the whole idea, but it is not presented well. Sorry author but there you have it.
