Audio Book Summary

The Importance of Being Earnest is a classic comedy of manners in which two flippant young men, in order to impress their respected beloveds, pretend that their names are “Ernest,” which both young ladies believe confers magical qualities on the possessor. It was first performed for the public on February 14, 1895 at the St. James’ Theatre in London, and is regarded by many critics and scholars as being the wittiest play in the English language. I love this play and have read it/seen it numerous times, but I couldn’t get past the opening scene in this narration.

Story was clever enough, but needed readers with a better sense of timing and inflection to do it justice. Since this is a play, everything depends on the dialogue.

The play is funny. The recording is terrible. It sounds like each part was recorded by the actor and then they were stitched together. The volume and timbre changes with each character

The book is hilarious of course. But, I do think the actors did not do it justice. Particularly the aunt and the two girls. The male actors were fine, and the servants were great.

A play I have known and seen many times completely ruined by the dreadful narration. That and the fact that for some reason none of the books will pay right through. I doubt I will bother listening to any more
