Audio Book Summary

A big storm is brewing, there's a killer on the loose, and the ghosts of Myrtle Beach are restless. Psychic medium Simon Kincaide and his sexy cop boyfriend, homicide detective Vic D'Amato, have their hands full helping the Grand Strand brace for rough surf, driving rain, and high winds as a winter storm roars toward shore.

Everyone's on edge, and rumors are rampant about sightings of Blackcoat Benny, a ghostly omen of danger, and worse, the Gallows Nine, the spirits of nine infamous criminals hanged back in the 1700s, a harbinger of disaster. Rough tides wash the wreck of an old pirate ship into shallow waters, high winds threaten to damage an old mansion with a dark past, and the citizens of the beach town hunker down to ride out the storm.

As the skies grow dark and the sea turns wild, several men from prominent local families end up dead under suspicious circumstances. Simon's premonition confirms Vic's gut feeling-the killing is just getting started. As Simon tries to reach out to the spirits of the murdered men to help the investigation, he's attacked by malicious ghosts that don't want anyone getting in the way of their long-overdue vengeance.

Great story, great narration. I’m a newcomer to Morgan Brice’s writing. In all honesty, I didn’t really think I would care for urban fantasy/paranormal stories. But earlier this summer I was offered the chance to review a copy of another book of hers (Treasure Trail) and I loved it. So, when a review copy of the audiobook of The Rising was offered, I was happy to agree to listen to and review it. But The Rising is book two in the series and I wanted to read or listen to the other books first. So, over the last few days I’ve binge listened to The Badlands series – #1 Badlands, #1.5 Lucky Town and #2 The Rising. All I can say is I’m really glad to have listened to all of them. Kale Williams performance of the stories was great; these are the first audiobooks of his that I’ve listened to. Morgan Brice’s writing style flowed well for me. The stories each grabbed me right from the beginning and didn’t want to let go. All three of these books are about the same couple, Simon Kincaide (a psychic medium) and his boyfriend, Vic D’Amato (a homicide cop). Book one is about the beginning of their relationship and a pretty rocky beginning it was. Books 1.5 and 2 focus on cases that they end up getting involved in. While I love reading/listening to series in order I think I would have been OK if I had just jumped in at book 2 because Ms. Brice does a great job of giving you information from the previous books that is pertinent to the story. It was kind of fitting that I listened to The Rising during the first week of September. The story has Myrtle Beach waiting for a big storm and the effect that it has on ghosts in the area. I live in SW Florida and we were on pins and needles for a bit to know whether or not hurricane Dorian was going to affect us (fortunately we were spared). There is a lot going on in this story and the blurb does a much better job of describing things than I can. I was totally captivated by Kale Williams performance of the story and I’m looking forward to listening to more books performed by him. There are a couple of short stories in the series that I haven’t read yet but I’ll be doing that soon. I don’t know if there are more books planned for this series or not but I’d sure like to read more adventures with Simon and Vic.

Simon and Vic are back, and now they live together. When Simon is asked to help get rid of bad mojo at a haunted house that's being renovated, and Vic begins investigating suicides that might be something else, it doesn't take long to realize that the two cases are connected. I really enjoy this series, and this story has the same great blend of creepiness and romance the first one had. Vic and Simon support each other completely, and they are working on not smothering each other with their worries about each other's job. The supporting cast of characters are terrific, and I love how they all take care of each other. The author tells an intriguing tale, which kept me on edge at times. Add in the sexy and loving connection between Vic and Simon, and you have another great read. I look forward to more adventures for this couple! I really enjoy listening to this narrator, who is fantastic in his portrayal of Simon, Vic, and the other characters. He has performed every audio I've listened to by this author, and I think they make a great pairing. I hope the author continues to use this narrator going forward.

This might be my favorite book in the series! The Rising picks up shortly after Lucky Town, and the adventure, steam, and ghosts are not quitting. Story: 4.5 stars I absolutely love Simon and he makes this series. Don't get me wrong, Vic is great, but Simon is my favorite. The story flowed and kept me engaged. On top of that, the action and plot are growing. Murder, mystery, intrigue...this is what happens when your suspects could be alive or dead. With new and old characters, the story is a must read and I had a hard time stopping when I needed to go somewhere. I can't wait to get into the next installment. Narration: 4.5 stars Kale Williams delivers another outstanding performance and brings this book to life. He has the ability to give each character their own voice. Overall: 4.5 stars This was a great installment to the Badlands series and I think it might be my favorite one so far. Well-written with a great cast of characters and a great narration, it is a must-read and one that is only enhanced by the audio. I highly recommend this 4.5 star book today. One-click!

5 Stars! This is book 2 in the series, although I guess you could technically say it's book 3, since there's a novella in between and they need to be read/listened to in order. I'm loving Simon and Vic, their relationship has been growing very naturally throughout the books and I adore that even if they are still dealing with some issues, they do it in a mature fashion. It doesn't hurt that the chemistry between them is amazing or that they're hot, hot, hot together, but above all, I love that they either talk through things or consult with their friends before doing something rash, especially in Vic's case, and how much they support each other and their careers, even if they're both dangerous professions in their own right. The cases were intriguing and well-thought out, weaving an interesting (and sort of scary) paranormal story with some criminal elements and balancing it out with Simon and Vic's relationship with each other and their friends, who I love and add a lot of humor and assistance to our heroes. Miss Eppie, Gabriella, I really hope this isn't the last we saw of Josh and Dante. Kale Williams did an outstanding job with the narration, I loved all the voices in the book but he really took the cake with Dunwood's ghost, that was creepy! While I've had the chance to read these books in e-book format, there's something about audio that adds up to the overall experience, so if possible, I suggest listening to these books, or just do both, they're that good.

I received this as a gift from the author and this is my honest review. I hadn't heard Badlands before listening to this, though I do now subsequently have that one as I loved this one so much. I really love Paranormal stories. Also Kale Williams does an excellent job of giving the guys a voice. I love how the cop and the Psychic Medium work together to solve the case. Highly recommended for all lovers of Paranormal MM romance, but do start with Badlands as you'll appreciate the characters more.

Thank you for the Audio, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Vic is involved with another supernatural killer, with Simons help they just maybe able to solve it. As for their relationship Vic is still having to come to grips with his new life style of the ghost world now he has a pirate that is back from the dead causing mayhem. Love this series of ghostly tells with psychic and and cop fighting hand and hand. Kale Williams is a wonder story teller.

Wow! I loved this book and it’s my favourite in the series so far. Vic is called out to a suicide, but something about it feels off to him and he becomes convinced it’s a supernatural murder. Simon, meanwhile is asked to help try and appease spirits at a local mansion that is haunted so badly it’s stopping renovation works. He’s also receiving terrifying visions of pirates who were hung in the town around two hundred years ago and, even more frightening, he knows that one of the men in these visions recognises him. Top that off with a wild storm that is disturbing shipwrecks on the sea floor and is raising the spiritual energy all around them and this is an action packed book. I love how the secondary characters are being brought into the series more and more so that they can support Simon and Vic, they’re such great characters. And of course I adore Simon and Vic and the love they have for each other and the strength they bring each other. Amazing book and I really hope there are more to come in the series! The narrator does an amazing job of bringing the characters and atmosphere to life in this series. He really is a perfect match for these books. I received an arc of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review

Boy this was a scary one. In this one we have pirates! Apparently a long time ago, we had the hanging of some pirates who were captured after their ship was scuttled. During a storm, their ship has been pushed up from the deep seas closer to shore. And of course with that, we have ghosts. There are more then one bad ghost running around. There is also a rash of murders that may be related to the ghosts. While trying to figure out who is doing the killings and what the ghosts want, there is a major storm brewing. What almost happened to Vic had me screaming out loud "Simon do something", it was totally terrifying. We get to meet an ancestor of Simon's who is of great help in battling the bad ghosts as well as a new person joining Simon's crew. On top of all of this, Simon & Vic are working on settling into living together. I hope there will be more books in this series as I love these two.
