Audio Book Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson: his debut novel for the young adult audience
More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Chosen by the Master in a mysterious inception ceremony, Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity's only defense against the Wild Chalklings—merciless creatures that leave mangled corpses in their wake. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students study the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.

Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings his unique brand of epic storytelling to the teen audience with an engrossing tale of danger and suspense—the first of a series. With his trademark skills in world-building, Sanderson has created a magic system that is so inventive and detailed that that readers who appreciate games of strategy and tactics just may want to bring Rithmatics to life in our world.

Brandon Sanderson has done it again - namely creating such vivid images in my minds eye and firing up the imaginative spark that lays within. As usual he completely moves me to the land of imagination where nothing is impossible and where no worries can break through! This place belongs to us - the dreamers! Thank you very much for another awesome work and for using the same narrator as usual (if you\'re not going with GA that is). I think this book is intended for a much younger audience, probably teenagers (I\'m turning 30 in two days)! This book can be enjoyed by anyone at any age! It\'s rather short though for a B.S book. I wish for a sequel. The ending is definitely built up for it. Enjoy the ride folks!

We downloaded this book to listen to on a short road trip. Needless to say, we were hooked almost from the start--even my wiggly 10 year old boy, who has the hardest time sitting still and keeping quiet paid close attention and hardly dared speak! We were captivated by the story, trying to figure out where everyone fit into the world of the Rithmatists. We also greatly enjoyed Michael Kramer's reading. My kids loved his voices and hope that he will read the next Rithmatist book--whenever it comes out!

Engaging. It was a pleasant surprise to have B. Sanderson writing about an alternate version of our world. Michael Kramer was fantastic, as always.

Read this for book club. Reminiscent of Harry Potter and Hunger Games and Full-metal Alchemist… didn’t quite feel like an original work, just a collection of tropes. hard pass if you’re at least at a high school graduate reading level.
