Audio Book Summary

2021 Audiobook of the Year – The British Book Awards

The Sunday Times Number One Bestseller

Jay Shetty, social media superstar and host of the #1 podcast ‘On Purpose’, distils the timeless wisdom he learned as a practising monk into practical steps anyone can take every day to live a less anxious, more meaningful life.

Over the past three years, Jay Shetty has become a favourite in the hearts and minds of millions of people worldwide. One of his clips was the most watched video on Facebook last year, with over 360 million views. His social media following totals over 32 million, he has produced over 400 viral videos, which have amassed more than 5 billion views, and his podcast, ‘On Purpose’, is consistently ranked the world’s #1 health-related podcast.

In this inspiring, empowering book, Shetty draws on his time as a monk in the Vedic tradition to show us how we can clear the roadblocks to our potential and power. Drawing on ancient wisdom and his own rich experiences in the ashram, Think Like a Monk reveals how to overcome negative thoughts and habits, and access the calm and purpose that lie within all of us.

The lessons monks learn are profound but often abstract. Shetty transforms them into advice and exercises we can all apply to reduce stress, improve focus, improve relationships, identify our hidden abilities, increase self-discipline and give the gifts we find in ourselves to the world. Shetty proves that everyone can – and should – think like a monk.

Jay has a soothing and engaging voice and is easy to listen to. I would have liked the narrative to be a bit more concise however, as some topics went on a bit and it all felt like a lot to take in. I have picked up a few amazing tips from this audiobook, which I wrote down to remember as I listened. My favourite is 'Don't judge the moment'. It would have been helpful to hear a summary (list) of the most important points to remember at the end of each chapter. Overall I enjoyed the book.

Title is a little ‘deep’ at first glance but the book helps you do exactly that but with a ‘real’ world take on how to use techniques. It has changed my perspective, my attitude and my awareness of everything and everyone .. what to get involved in and what not to, where to spend my energy and where to save it. The book has helped me during dark days as much as good days. I’m obviously never going to be a monk and I doubt I’ll live my life with this book in mind everyday of my life but I will try ! Probably the most grounding book I’ve read and can’t recommend it enough. The down down side for me is that by using audible I can’t go back and pin point things that I would like to re-read or share ie. mantras , meditation techniques , sayings, proverbs, items of particular interest. I’d listen to book whilst driving so no chance of making notes .. I will now have to buy hard copy and re read to gather the info I need.
