Audio Book Summary

Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez is startling and original fiction that raises provocative questions of power and freedom, love and dependence. An enchanting and unforgettable novel based on little-known fact, Wench combines the narrative allure of Cane River by Lalita Tademy and the moral complexities of Edward P. Jones's The Known World as it tells the story of four black enslaved women in the years preceding the Civil War. A stunning debut novel, Wench marks author Perkins-Valdez-previously a finalist for the 2009 Robert Olen Butler Short Fiction Prize-as a writer destined for greatness.

I love the story and the narrator. The story bring humbleness to the world that we live in. The torment that these women go through and yet still stand with pride. The Narrator was picked with perfection. For each character she speaks with a little different tone. So there will be no confusion as to who is talking. I love her reading. I am going to look for more of both of their work.

I'm not usually a fan of historical fiction, but this story was emotionally gripping through and through. I highly recommend this title.

Interesting aspect of history I was not aware of. Some parts were explicit, so couldn't listen to it around my children. I really enjoyed the main character and seeing the world of slavery through her eyes.
