Audio Book Summary

A retired university professor is diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease that will lead him to lose his memory and die within a few years. On his way home from the doctor's office, he witnesses a pretty young girl being kidnapped right off the street. As the police drag their heels, he realizes that if he doesn't act the girl may never be found alive.

Jennifer Riggins, the kidnapped girl, is being held prisoner by a perverted couple who run an exclusive website called 'What Comes Next,' on which viewers can watch, in real time, the horrors inflicted on their victims. Given the moniker 'Number Four,' Jennifer is at the mercy of the depraved pair, with thousands tuning in for every episode of her ongoing nightmare.

What Comes Next is a bold and timely thriller about what lurks within the depths of society's most depraved minds, and how the only hope for a girl whose life is just beginning is a man whose life is nearing its end.

It was superb! At times I was completely enraged, others worried, but all the time engaged with the plot, great writing, and amazing narration.

Very interesting psychological thriller. Written using a unique situation and perspective to tell the story. I really enjoyed this book and listened at every opportunity I got. I did have to skip forward a bit when the descriptions got a bit monotonous. I found myself saying, “yes ok I got it, move on” a few times. But that said I would highly recommend this book. The narrator was very good, but I’ll give him a hall pass on the female voices, most male narrators try a little too hard portraying a female voice and its a bit odd.

Good, not great. It was unique and touching, and, at times, captivating. But, it was monotonous and carried on too long in many parts throughout. The narrator captured the essence of the professor and villainous characters, but not the innocent. 3 stars.

The majority of this book is about a porn style torture of a 16 year old. Confronting, abrasive and revolting. Unique story line, if it's your thing. It is definitely not mine

Pretty disturbing, and not in an interesting way. Lots of unnecessary details about snuff film involving an underage girl. And continually referring to one character as “the sex offender” rather than using the character’s name. For example, “the sex offender said goodnight to his mom, then the sex offender went to bed”. It was just weird.
